What is RTP in Slots and Why It Matters for Every Player

RTP — Return to Player — the percentage of money returned to the player. We explain in simple terms: how it works, what RTP is considered good, and how it affects your bankroll.

RTP in plain English

RTP (Return to Player) is the percentage of money a slot returns to players over the long run. If a slot's RTP is 96%, that means: out of every $100 wagered by all players, the slot returns $96. The remaining $4 is the casino's edge.

Important: RTP works over millions of spins. In a single session you can win 1,000× or lose everything — RTP doesn't guarantee the result of any specific session.

What counts as a good RTP?

97%+Excellent. Rare to find (Blood Suckers — 98%, Mega Joker — 99%)
96–97%Good. Most popular slots from Pragmatic Play, NetEnt
94–96%Average. Acceptable, but the difference shows over the long run
Below 94%Low. The casino keeps more than 6% — bad value for the player

RTP vs volatility

RTP tells you how much comes back, while volatility tells you how it comes back. High volatility = rare but big wins. Low volatility = frequent but small ones.

A slot with a 96% RTP and high volatility might pay nothing for 200 spins, then drop a 500× hit. A slot with the same RTP but low volatility will pay every 5–10 spins, but only 2×–5× at a time.

Where to check a slot's RTP

  • Inside the slot itself — usually under the "Info" or "Rules" menu
  • On the provider's website
  • On our high-RTP slots page

Practical tip

Don't chase the highest possible RTP — it's not a guarantee of winning. But all else being equal, pick a 96%+ slot over a 93% one. Over 1,000 spins the difference adds up to 3% of everything you've wagered — that's real money.
