Scruffy Scallywags slot review
The needle of an ordinary compass points one way only — north — and sailors have plotted their course by it for centuries. In Habanero's Scruffy Scallywags, a ragged pirate crew is on the hunt for the legendary Kraken, and bottles of rum, according to the description, lead the way to a bountiful booty. These rascals' compass is a special one: it can point to respins, to bet multipliers or to spin result multipliers — and, together with the Octopus and its wilds, it doesn't go ashore when Free Spins begin.
What's in the hold: a 5x3 grid, 30 lines, medium volatility, four RTP versions from 92% to 98% and a cap of x272. The main cargo is a pair of helper bonuses, the Compass and the Octopus: they keep working in Free Spins, while 3 or more Scatters open 15 Free Spins.
Where does the compass point?
The deck is standard: a 5x3 grid, 15 positions, with 30 paylines.
This compass has three directions. A Compass bonus may appear and award respins, bet multipliers or spin result multipliers. Alongside it works a second helper — the Octopus: this bonus may also appear at random and add random extra wilds to the screen.
What does the crew take into Free Spins?
The key thing about the bonus is that the Compass and the Octopus stay on board.
💡 Boarding party: getting into Free Spins
- 3 or more Scatters anywhere trigger Free Spins;
- 15 Free Spins are awarded initially;
- for every Scatter that shows up again, 1 Free Spin is added to the bonus.
💡 The helpers don't go ashore
- Compass bonuses keep working during Free Spins;
- so does the Octopus bonus.
Free Spins here don't run on rules of their own: the Compass, with its three possible rewards, and the Octopus, with its extra wilds, sail with the crew into the bonus too. The rules also list a multiplier of x2.
How big is this crew's booty?
Modest: MEDIUM volatility and a maximum multiplier of x272, or 272 times the bet. That one limit covers the whole voyage — the Compass multipliers and Free Spins with their top-ups alike.
Your share of that booty — the RTP version — is assigned by the casino.
⚠️ The casino sets your share of the plunder
Pirates split their plunder by shares agreed before they ever set sail. In Scruffy Scallywags, your share is settled in advance too — only it's the venue that assigns it: RTP 92%, 94%, 96% or 98%. The smallest share falls exactly 6 percentage points of theoretical return short of the largest. Which one you've got is written in the game info — read it before you weigh anchor.
Full holds
- A Compass bonus can award respins, bet multipliers or spin result multipliers.
- The Octopus bonus can randomly add extra wilds to the screen.
- 3 or more Scatters anywhere award 15 Free Spins, and each Scatter that shows up again adds one more.
- The Compass and the Octopus keep working in Free Spins, and volatility is MEDIUM.
Holes in the hull
- The booty is limited: the cap is x272, or 272 times the bet.
- The Compass and the Octopus don't run to a timetable: the rules say they "may" appear.
- New Scatters in Free Spins add one game apiece — not another 15.
- The venue may assign a 92% RTP share — exactly 6 points less than 98%.
Who will this crew take into its ranks?
| Player profile | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Players who like helper bonuses that keep working in Free Spins | 🟢 Yes | Compass bonuses and the Octopus bonus continue during Free Spins. |
| Fans of surprises with different outcomes | 🟢 Likely yes | The Compass can award respins, bet multipliers or spin result multipliers, and the Octopus extra wilds. |
| Anyone expecting the Compass on every spin | 🟠 Likely no | By the rules, Compass bonuses "may" appear — a possibility, not a schedule. |
| Players expecting repeat Scatters to double the bonus | 🟡 Caution | Each such Scatter adds 1 Free Spin; the cap is x272, and the venue may assign the 92% RTP version. |
⚡ Scruffy Scallywags: time to weigh anchor?
Before you weigh anchor, bear two things in mind: the booty here stops at x272, and the Compass and the Octopus don't keep a timetable — the rules say they "may" appear. If that doesn't stop you, the voyage is a moderate one: MEDIUM volatility, a Compass with three possible rewards — respins, bet multipliers or spin result multipliers — an Octopus with extra wilds, 15 Free Spins for 3 or more Scatters plus one more spin for every new Scatter, and both helpers keep working in the bonus. The RTP version, from 92% to 98%, is assigned by the casino — find it in the game info. An ordinary compass needle always points north; these rascals' compass picks a new direction every time — and keeps hold of it even in Free Spins.
